Stadtkinder

Da bietet sich zum einen Whitehorse 80KM im Norden, Haines Junction 150KM im Nordosten und Skagway 90KM im Süden, an.

Auch wenn Whitehorse die Hauptstadt des Yukon ist, haben wir kein Großstadtfeeling erwartet, denn im Großraum leben nur nur knapp 30000 Menschen.

Whitehorse besticht aber auch mehr durch seine Vergangenheit als wichtigster Knotenpunkt für den Goldrausch im Yukon. In den liebevoll restaurierten Straßenzüge findet man unzählige Artefakte des 18 Jahrhunderts und verliert sich schnell in einer Hollywood Western Romantik. Nur hier ist tatsächlich alles echt. Und Kinos gibt es sogar 2 an der Zahl.

Das in Alaska gelegene Skagway topte das für mich noch einmal, auch wenn hier täglich 2 Kreuzfahrtschiffe anlegen. Die Stadtväter haben bei der Restaurierung noch mehr Wert auf Details gelegt und so sind sogar die hölzernen Gehwege erhalten geblieben. Aussderdem ist es ein vielfaches kleiner als Whitehorse und traumhaft in einer Fijordlandschaft gelegen. Es sind noch so viele alte Gebäude erhalten das sich sich beim Cafegenuß vorstellen kann wie hier aber tausende von Golduchern ankamen um den erschwerlichen Weg an den Klodike Fluss auf sich zu nehmen. Goldsucher gibt es mittlerweile keine mehr, dafür aber Souvenirjäger aus aller Herren Länder die hier durch Ihr Einkäufe eine kleine historische Perle am A...h der Welt am Leben erhalten.

Als dritte im Bunde gibt es noch Haines Junction was aber eher ein Dorf als eine Stadt ist. Hierher fährt man aber nicht zu Shoppen und Staunen sonder um die nochmal Atemberaubendere Landschaft des Kluanee Nationalparkes zu genießen. Und da wir uns in Whitehorse und Skagway ausgetobt haben, gehen wir hier auch wieder Wandern.

An dieser Stalle möchte ich mich bei allen bedanken die mir zum Geburtstag gratuliert haben. Ich habe den Tag mit Dave aus Tchechien verbracht, der ebenfalls Geburtstag hatte um am Abend mit der ganzen Crew vom Caribou Crossing einen Drauf zu machen;-)

City Kids

Even if we enjoy the landscape and the outdoor opportunities to the fullest, we like a little bit of city life every now and then - fast food, cinema and a nice pub...

So there's Whitehorse, about 80km north, Haines Junction 150 km northeast and Skagway 90km south.

Whitehorse, even with being the capital of the Yukon has not much of a big city at all. There's just 30000 people living in the greater area of the city.

It is more the city's past, especially while the gold rush, that makes its charme. As you wander some of the streets you might think you're in a Hollywood movie. But it's real. And speaking of hollywood movies there's even two movie theaters in town. Whoever knows us, will know how much we appreciate that.

Then there is the city of Skagway in Alaska. It is even more nice than Whitehorse, much smaller and situated beautyfully within the fjords.There'd been a lot of restauration done to the old buildings and the wooden boardwalks are still there. It's just that there's more than 2 cruiseships daily. But if you're having your coffee in these old wooden buildings you can still imagine the thousands of stampeders arriving here, willing to make it all the way up to the Klondike and the gold fields. Nowadays the people arriving here are not looking for gold any more, but people from all over the world seem to be looking for souvenirs. That it seems is keeping the little township at the end of the world alive.

So the third one would be Haines Junction, more a village than a city. It's more a destination for its absolutely breathtaking scenery, in the nearby Kluanee National Park. Since we've had quiet a bit of citylife in Whitehorse and Skagway, we're here for hiking again.
